DevOps Engineer

Kiyoung, nice to meet you. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hello. I'm Ki-Young Lee, a DevOps Engineer. I joined SeaVantage in September last year and am currently working as a DevOps Engineer in the Technology Lab team. Prior to joining, I worked at a Japanese IT company for about 14 years, where I was mainly responsible for infrastructure development and operation of payment-based platforms for banks and card companies.

What is your role?

I am in charge of running the cloud infrastructure of SVMP platform (maritime supply chain visualization platform based on real-time forecasting) of Cventage, and I work in two areas, system and network, to ensure that the platform runs well in a stable environment. Among them, I design and operate the infrastructure architecture on public clouds such as AWS/GCP, and I also manage the network of the on-premises environment that interfaces with the cloud.

What made you decide to join SeaVantage

There are two main aspects. First, I had been considering returning to Korea because I had been living in Japan for a long time. I think the impact of the Corona pandemic was a driver, as the Japanese company I was working for at the time had been working from home for a long period of time, and I think I was struggling with issues such as decreased work concentration and blurred privacy boundaries when working from home. In particular, in terms of my personal life, my visits to Korea became increasingly restricted and I was unable to see my family often, which also contributed to my decision to return home.
The second was to advance my career.
I wanted a development environment where I could operate systems on a variety of cloud-based platforms and continuously try out new technologies and services, and I was intrigued by the fact that SeaVantage has a cloud-based SaaS solution and has unique technology strengths in the maritime logistics industry. Furthermore, I realized that the business was looking to expand its SaaS solutions globally, and I felt that my engineering background and experience in Japan would be a good fit, so I didn't hesitate to join.

Do you have a memorable work experience as a DevOps engineer?

I think the variety of work and development tools is getting really diverse, and I think I had a little trouble adapting and utilizing the work and development tools that I used in Japan because I don't use them here.
For example, we used to use Microsoft Office, but now we use Google Workspace, and our developer tools are Gitlab, Warp, and Grafana, which I never used in the past, but now I've adapted to them well ^^.
Also, I recently had a business meeting with a Japanese company (Toyota Trading), and I was able to respond to the customer in Japanese, which is something we only do in English for global companies. Even though my main job is as a DevOps engineer, it's memorable to be able to utilize my skills to help out like this sometimes.
Above all, the process of preparing service descriptions in Japanese gave us a deeper understanding of the solution, and we learned what improvements could be made to the system by communicating directly with operational staff.
